dan rossen

Although Rossen's early artistic training was focused on the classical and representational, it has always been his natural instinct to depict his surroundings in abstract forms. Most of the paintings evolve as an intuitive reaction to an interior space or a landscape. To evoke this kind of sensory memory, he applies many layers of painting, using gesture and an innate sense of color. Traces of previous layers will remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways he wouldn’t anticipate. What emerges is a very personal abstract discourse, formed from both conscious and unconscious expressions. The paintings are an ongoing process of addition and subtraction until, at an unforeseen moment, everything on the canvas co-exists with a deep resonance and balanced intensity.
